What Is a Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation?
A Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation (CDE) is an in-depth assessment conducted by a licensed specialist—such as a developmental pediatrician, psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), psychiatrist, or neurologist. Its purpose is to determine whether an individual has autism or another developmental disorder and to identify any medically necessary services.

Our evaluation usually includes:
-
Interviews with parents/caregivers or the individual (if an adult)
-
A developmental and medical history
-
Direct observation of the child/ adult
-
Standardized tests and questionnaires (ADOS-2, CARS2, Vineland, BASC, TAP)
-
A written report with a formal diagnosis and therapy recommendations

ADOS-2
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured, standardized assessment of communication, social interaction, play/imaginative use of materials, and restricted and repetitive behaviors for individuals who have been referred because of possible autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

This assessment is considered the "gold standard" for diagnosing ASD (Kanne, Randolph, & Farmer, 2008; Ozonoff, Goodlin-Jones, & Solomon, 2005)

There are 5 assessment modules. Each module offers standard activities designed to elicit behaviors that are directly relevant to the diagnosis of ASD at various developmental levels and chronological ages. The ADOS-2 is one piece of the comprehensive diagnostic evaluation required by Medicaid and private insurance companies prior to authorization for ABA services. (The person conducting this assessment should have the required training by an experienced ADOS-2 Certified Trainer and have prior knowledge of autism and be experienced in administering and scoring assessments).
Why Do You Need a CDE for ABA Therapy?
ABA is one of the most widely recommended therapies for children with autism. But before insurance companies, including Florida Medicaid, will approve or pay for ABA services, they require:

-
A confirmed diagnosis, and
-
A statement that ABA is medically necessary for your child

That’s where the CDE comes in. Without it, insurance cannot authorize therapy.
Family Resources
Many autism assessments provide a diagnosis but do not focus on specific recommendations to help our clients and their families. At Hart 4 Autism, we focus on generating family-friendly reports with recommendations that can be implemented across settings. Recommendations may range from determining additional resources that may be helpful, informing families of scholarships, and a list of next step recommendations.
